In today's complex, interconnected world, leadership goes beyond just managing teams and delivering results—it’s about forging genuine, meaningful connections. It's about Authentic Leadership, a leadership style rooted in empathy, trust, and empowerment. Throughout my 25+ years leading large-scale transformations across APAC and the Middle East, I've found that the most successful and sustainable outcomes stem from authenticity—leading not just with skills but also with heart and clarity.
Drawing inspiration from a recent Harvard Business Review article on empathy, combined with my own leadership experiences and insights gained from leading high-performing teams, I believe these principles form the core pillars of Authentic Leadership:
Start with Shared Understanding
To lead authentically, start by collectively defining key behaviours. Without clarity, your team defaults to assumptions that hinder collaboration. At Standard Chartered Bank, while leading transformational changes impacting bank wide employees across the global markets, my first step was aligning teams around a shared vision, clearly outlining behaviours like active listening, respectful disagreement, and genuine curiosity about each other’s perspectives. Clarity fosters collaboration, and collaboration sparks innovation.
Lead with Empathy and Deep Listening
Empathy is not optional—it's fundamental. But empathy doesn’t mean you have to "fix" everything for others. It means genuinely creating space where people feel heard and understood. In my roles as Regional Director at VERMEG International and Director at Bank of Singapore, I prioritized being present, actively listening, and resisting the impulse to immediately jump to solutions. This approach cultivated deeper trust, more honest conversations, and ultimately, more effective outcomes.
Balance Support with Clear Accountability
Empathy without structure can lead to confusion; structure without empathy leads to disengagement. Striking a balance is crucial. At OCBC Bank and Standard Chartered, my teams delivered significant reductions in operational costs through structured frameworks that emphasized transparency and clear expectations, coupled with emotional intelligence to understand individual team members' circumstances. Accountability was not imposed but co-created empowering teams to feel ownership in shared goals.
Empower Through Trust and Clarity
Trust is the glue of effective leadership. As a key Leader, I've witnessed how trust elevates team morale, collaboration, and creativity. Trust comes from consistent, transparent communication. It’s earned by doing what you say you'll do. Whether managing multi-million-dollar budgets or establishing PMOs, my guiding principle has always been transparency and clear communication. As trust deepens, empowerment follows naturally, enabling teams to innovate and deliver exceptional results confidently.
Set Boundaries to Protect Your Energy
Empathy and empowerment should not lead to burnout. Authentic leadership requires modelling emotional regulation and setting boundaries. Leaders must facilitate understanding without absorbing everyone else's emotions. Throughout my journey, especially leading transformational initiatives across diverse cultures and markets, I’ve learned to facilitate difficult conversations without losing sight of my own well-being—essential for sustainable leadership.
Choose Words That Connect, Not Disconnect
Words matter—deeply. Simple phrases can either open dialogue or shut it down entirely. Harvard Business Review emphasizes avoiding dismissive language like "At least..." or "I know exactly how you feel." Instead, validate experiences and emotions. Genuine curiosity and acknowledgment lead to authentic connections that strengthen teams and build resilient relationships.
